Students of Generation Arts

Generation Arts provides free drama training for young people NEET in London. 100% of the class of 2016, and 86% of the class of 2015 have progressed onto acting training. I have worked with this company for several years and, as well as creating excellent shows, it's always so rewarding to work with these young people.

Reviews

"The festival vibe that Lazarus Theatre has created at Brockley Jack Theatre works fantastically well for this vibrant adaptation. Fake grass, bunting, coolboxes, crates of beer, and a festival trolley  all displayed a convincing scene."

"..the audience immediately embraced the relaxed vibe and were willing to play along. A simple set and familiar modern costumes throughout immediately made this production feel accessible to all."

The Spy in the Stalls

"As far as the production went, I loved Rachel Dingle’s set, which actually starts outside the theatre. Played in the round, with some fascinating costume and music choices, this production of The Taming of the Shrew. works very well at grabbing and holding its audience’s attention from the beginning."

Design Bio

'Into the Woods' is the fairy story without the happy ending. The design was based on the idea of patchwork, which gives a sense of security and comfort, similar to reading a child a bed time fairy story. I created a sort of false pros at either end of the traverse staging to suggest a forest canopy. However on top of the patchwork forest, I added flowers from harsh metallic, neon coloured, shiny and glittery fabrics to show that all was not quite right. The patchwork on the ensemble costumes was also ripped and distressed,

Reviews

"Rachel Dingle’s costume choices are also clever and fascinating in delivering a wild and fierce Tamburlaine through disheveled attire first, and then a successful and powerful king with a proper smart-looking suit at the peak of his success."

London Theatre

"This production of Tamburlaine is also visually interesting in other respects: light design by Jai Morjaria and costumes by Rachel Dingle are cleverly integrated and add depth and interpretations to the play. It is rare to see a Camden Fringe production where so many details are thought-through to such an extent. For example, core enemies would often wear stuffy suits in contrast to more comfortable sport clothes of the opposition, and as character loyalty and morality changes, so do their clothes. "

West End Wilma

"It’s in modern dress and a near blank set which works really well and makes a clear link between the themes of this 400 year old play and our own experiences of war and power....Costume Designer Rachel Dingle brilliantly reinforces the cyclical nature of power and the growing professionalisation of Tamburlaine’s forces."

"Rachel Dingle’s set is brilliant: black-and-white themed, and not just neatly segmented, but with a perplexing “trompe l’oeil” feel, like those castellated never-ending staircases, as the actors move up and down. And we keep noticing the little, puzzling details. Why is that picture hung slightly crooked?"

"Rachel Dingle's simplistic set design is also clever, the extensive presence of boxes is a constant reminder of all that went on during the London riots."

West End Frame

Design Bio

This musical was strongly influenced by the London riots, so a large part of the design surrounded the items people stole during these riots. At the beginning the skyline of London was created with cardboard boxes. These were ripped down by the cast and then used to create the different furniture in different scenes.
